Trauma is a main focal point for many writers, with a bulk of their work centered on dissecting and testifying against traumatic events they have experienced or witnessed in their lives. This can be necessary but tiring work, sometimes leading writers to see their pain as a crutch and re-traumatize the self; raising the question: how do we engage our pain in ways that are safe? In this workshop I invite participants to be brave. Reading the work of Patrica Smith, Natalie Diaz, Vievee Francis and more, we will analyze how their use of personification, tone, and form anchors and propels their writing forward.

Time and time again, we have created defense mechanisms, built walls that have hardened into impenetrable fortresses as a means of survival but now that we have survived, these tools may no longer serve us. How do we shift the lens from our pain to acknowledge our healing. How might our writing change now that pain no longer fuels our work? What nuances can we find? We know how to write stories about the fire, now how do we write stories about emerging from the ash?

There are slots open for full-tuition and partial tuition for Crystal Valentine's summer workshop. Please see scholarship descriptions below:

~The Golden Scholarship: Myles S. Golden is a black gender-nonconforming trans-femme visual artist and poet, as well as the 2018 College Union Poetry Slam Invitation Winner as apart of the New York University slam team. In honor of Golden, this need based scholarship provides support for gay, lesbian, bi, queer, trans, gender-nonconforming people of color.

~The Young And Poppin' Scholarship: This is a need base scholarship for youth between the ages of 13 and 19.

~The Origin Scholarship: This is a need base scholarship for anyone who was not born in the United States, regardless of their present state of residence.

~The Foundation Scholarship: America is known for its selective memory and its participation in the erasure of communities of color, especially Indigenous communities. Crystal rejects this erasure and acknowledges the first inhabitants of the land upon which she was born. This need base scholarship provides support for Indigenous People living in America.

~The Valentine Scholarship: This is a general need base scholarship that provides aid to any participant of the workshop.
